The Humber Bridge opened on 24 June 1981 and for 16 years was world’s longest single-span suspension bridge at 2.2km across in total. The longest span covering 1,410m.

It remains the longest bridge in the world which can be crossed on foot or cycle.

Work on the construction took eight years, during which time upwards of one thousand workers were employed at times of peak activity, and the bridge now carries up to 10 million vehicles each year.
